Dry van trucking is generally the most common form of freight transportation. “Dry van” is the term used to refer to the type of vehicle that is used to haul cargo and is the type of truck that you typically see with large storage containers being towed on the highway.
As opposed to refrigerated shipping trucks, dry van trucking involves hauling box trailers that are not temperature controlled. This means that non-perishable items are typically the items shipped in these types of trucks.
What Do Dry Vans Haul?
Since dry vans are not refrigerated, that means that they do not carry perishable items. However, they are used in transporting many different items, as they can carry large shipments up to 45,000 pounds. Here is a list of potential items and commodities that can be palletized and hauled with dry van trucking:
- Packaged, non-perishable food and beverage
- Various electronics (those not affected by a non-temperature controlled environment)
- Machinery and parts
- Industrial equipment
- Cleaning products
- Beauty products
- Healthcare equipment
Who Uses Dry Van Trucking for Shipping?
There are lots of industries that use dry van trucking for their shipping needs. Dry van trucking is typically less expensive because it does not require temperature-controlled cargo containers. As a result, many industries prefer to use dry van trucking over other forms of cargo hauling when shipping nonperishable goods.
Many dry van trucking companies have open availability for freight shipping, meaning it is easy for these industries to get their products shipped faster. Some of the most common industries that use dry van shipping are health and beauty, automotive, non-perishable food and beverage companies, electronics, manufacturing, consumer goods, and cleaning products. This type of shipping is very versatile and is a great choice for many industries.
How Dry Van Shipping Differs from Other Shipping Methods
Dry van shipping is different from other forms of shipping in a few ways. First, dry van shipping involves a fully enclosed container that attaches to the back of a semi-truck where the shipment is loaded into the container. There are two typical sizes of dry van shipping trailers, with one that is 53’ with a capacity of 45,000 lbs., and a smaller 28’ trailer with a 22,500 lbs. capacity.
As noted earlier, dry van transportation does not involve the use of refrigerated or temperature-controlled containers, but it allows for more space to transport large quantities of goods more conveniently.
In comparison, there are two different types of flatbed trucks that are also frequently used. The first is a standard flatbed, which offers a long, open bed that is connected to a semi-truck. One advantage of a flatbed is the ability to carry large machinery and heavy equipment more easily than within an enclosed container, as well as allowing for extra weight (48,000 lbs. max).
The second form of flatbed shipping is called Stop Deck trailers. These also include an open bed for large, tall, and heavy equipment, but offers two different deck levels for machinery to be transported.
Lastly, there are refrigerated trucks. These are used best when they ship perishable or temperature-sensitive items. Depending on the type of cargo being hauled, they can either cool or heat the inside of the container. Due to the air conditioning systems and insulation, these are typically smaller in the amount of cargo they can haul and are generally more expensive to run than dry van shipping.
How Much Weight Can a Dry Van Haul?
The weight limit depends on the size of the dry van container that your dry van shipping company uses to haul your cargo. The largest size that is typically used for dry van shipping is a 53’ length container, which can carry up to 45,000 lbs. maximum weight. There are smaller containers that are used as well, with a 28’ container that can carry up to 22,500 lbs. of cargo- essentially half the weight of the larger container.
